DEBATE EVALUATION !

What are the main things that you've learnt about Media Studies through taking part? (Try to list at least three new ideas, theories, etc.)

well i learnt about the idea of freedom of speech and civil right, how this comes effect in society and in the media. I also learnt alot of polictical ideas through this debate and realised the effect the media has in polictics. it also reinforced the idea of hyperdomic theory and drip drip theory.

What other skills have you developed? (e.g. debating skills, team-working, researching, public speaking, etc.)Has it been an effective way to motivate you and to help you learn? Why? Why not?

i did improve my research skill and develope the skill of remembering things, as i did not read of a paper. being the captain taught me to 4get about my thoughts and think for everyone and i learnt to take responsibility of a group. its given me confidence as i want to do teaching when i am older but one of my fears were talking to a big group so this made me ovetcome it.

Rate your personal performance for...a. research/preparation; b. performance on the day, and explain why.
What could you personally have done better?

well out of 5 as a resercher, i think i did ok but i could have done much more and linked it all together. so i wud give myself a 4 out of 5.

My performance was ok i guess maybe i cud have linked it more to the media....so erm i say 4 out of 5. ye of course i could have done better. no such ting as perfect and 2 improve it i wud have made it based more on media.

pecial mention for their contributions?

every1 did really good, but iena of course 4 her last min act ! love ya gyal ! xx

How could your team have done better? (Don't blame individuals but think about general points).

not read of papers, prepare speech more, spoke more confident, and alway link back to media.

Rate your opposing team's overall performance. What was particularly good about it? In your opinion, who deserves a special mention for their contributions?

i love rajpreet speech, very confident! the other team were wiked...i loved all of their speeches!

Was it a fair result? Why? Why not?

nah coz its all abt who has more points ...therefor we shud have won...if not...b4 da debate da teachers shud have decided is it points or number of debate that wud make a team win.

Was the whole event like you expected it to be? How was it different?

i was so nervous, didnt expect. i had a lot of fun tho...it was good :)

Do you feel that you had the right level of support from your teachers in preparing you? What else could we have done for you?

yep we had all that lesson time...so they were rite behind us init !

How could the whole organisation of the debate have been improved? (Over the last few weeks and on the actual day).

DECIEDING HOW DA WINNING TEAM WILL B CHOSEN !

What do you suggest we could do next to test the relative abilities of Year 13 Media Studies students?

wait 4 our a levels resluts- ha ha

Are you pleased that we had a Media Studies debate? Was it interesting and enjoyable? Why? Why not?

was fun, learnt alot..it was a good event !

Would you recommend that we have a debate for Year 12 students next year? Why? Why not?

Laura Malvey Theory

This is the theory in which the theorist laura malvey believes that the narrative is set out for thr audience is made to "identify" with the protaganist which is more likely to be male, Because of this we see everything from the "male gaze" for example the camera zooming into a lady breats, let us see and think whateva the male character sees. This concept reinforces the idea of a patrichal society but not only that it opresses females in the text and sees them only as " sex object" !!!!!

This theory does not really link into my study due to the fact that the gender of the muslim is not focus on in my study...only muslim as a whole group is looked into !!!

* WoRD GLoSSaRy *

*RACISM - practises and behaviour involving social and ecomonic discrimation, based on false assumption that one particular ethnic group or race is culturally and biogically inferior to another.

well this links into my study due to the fact that i can state or link that the misrepresentation of islam and islamaphobia is a form of racism and is a method how racism is provoked.

*RIGHT WING- having a conservative or facist polictical learning.

well you can argue, that some newspapers have a right-wing idealogy that cause racism to occur.

* STEROTYPE- the social classification of a group of people by identifying common characteristic and universally applying them in an often oversimplified and generalised way.

This links to my study, because the western media tends to sterotype Islam and people who are muslim as all being terrorist or sterotypes their beliefs without even knowing the truth.

* VALUE JUDGEMENT- a subjective opinion based on an individual attituts, beliefs and values rather than on any objective carteri.

Again i could say that the western media focus on islam at from a value judgement point of view, and they are subjective towards the topic rather then objective.

AL-JAZEERA- arab satilite television station based in and subsidies by the arab state of Qatar and widely viewed across the arab world. Al-jazeera coverage of the world events reflects the arab/ Islamic perspective and sensibilities.

This is very interesting to my study, as it a form of media that represent the other view. I can compare the western ideoligies with the islamic idealogie.

*ARCHETYPE- an often repeated character type or representation which is instantly recognise to an audience .

this can relate to the character type of a terrorist, 4 example always shown with the long beard or only to be muslim, and now this is what the audience recognise to be a terrorist charcter.

*CULTURE EFFECT THEORY- audience theory which argues that, in absence of real substinal evidence of the direct realationship between media text and people behaviour, the effects of media are long term. Constant exposure to particular message can be seen as slowly affecting judgement and attitudes in the same way that constant dripping water is.

this links in with my study because it uses the idea of drip drip theory in the media , and the idea of the effects of media.

* LEFT-WING- having socialist or communist polictical ideas that are critical to status quo in society, and ask 4 change in society.

this links to my study becuse newspaper can be left-wing and show a more different reponses to the situation.

* KNOCKING COPY- journalistic shorthand for newspaper articles that seek out negative ideas to the public eyes.

This links with my study because it the idea that the media is giving out the negetive issues of islam.
